Ok... as for the OP's question on game mechanics... he's a good up front shooter... then you have to throw him into combat ASAP once he's off that first click. And yes... I'm the guy sitting across the table making chainsaw noises.

As for the the other nonsense...

Ummm... no. No he wasn't.

And since he's taken a red ring yet again, Atrocitus' own ring no less, during the current "War of the Green Lanterns" arc, he's still not orange.

It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye. Then it's all fun and games without depth perception.
