I just wanted to thank everybody who posted in this thread. I have read some DC comics before(Watchmen and Batman - The Dark Knight Returns), but never considered myself a "fan". After reading through this thread I have picked up and read Kingdom Come (AMAZING!) and a "Brave and The Bold" issue. Its a safe place to start, and the single issue BatB stories are nice to pick up randomly.
Kingdom Come is simply amazing. It makes me want to read more if its ilk (Crisis, etc.)
For those of you who have gained some familiarity with the DC universe and would enjoy some more lighthearted fare; the canceled Blue Beetle series (it starts off a bit slow, but quickly becomes hilarious and very human), and the current Power Girl series (also a fantastically entertaining book).
I also cannot recommend Booster Gold enough, especially if you read 52
Over a year later since this thread was last posted on and the thread is still sticky.
At least a few of the sticky threads were removed, even one of the closed threads. Too bad about the Marvel version of this thread.
Change... it's not always a good thing.
Just look at the nasty things done to integrate the DC & Marvel threads.
Ugly as all hell and not nearly as easy to manage and travel to and fro on.
Every person I know that is a Wonder Woman fan loved her doing it. Most have even asked for her return to the book.
I liked her bit on Genocide as a Wonder Woman villain that didn't last long enough. It also turned me off of Lopresti's artwork. It was a fun run, though.
Favorite DC read: Demon Knights
Only Marvel read: Avengers Arena POWER GIRL OR BUST!!! <-- This summarizes my thoughts on the release schedule.
My 2 cents worth. Read the New Aquaman series a great jump on point is the Throne of Atlantis crossover with the JL. Johns is on and the art is great( a page with wonder woman and super man catching an air craft carrier...WOW!)
I was going over the list to see if there was anything of value left to contribute. I found this listed in the first few posts without Kingdom Come or Frank Miller's epic Dark Knight saga being added to the list. I whole-heartedly agree and recommend these.
Just trying to help.

Kingdom Come graphic novel - Artwork by Alex Ross makes this a beautiful graphic novel, but the writing's the thing that makes it a great one. This is set in a universe where the big-name heroes of the current DC universe have faded into the background, leaving the way clear for a host of newcomers. But the newcomers are spoiled, directionless and it leads to disaster, plunging the world into a crisis that can only be solved when the figureheads of old return to the fray.
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns - Another future DC universe setting, this sees an old and fading Batman return to the streets of Gotham to contend with street gangs gone wild and, ultimately, having to come to terms with a Superman who has been co-opted by the CIA. Truly dark, truly menacing and one of the most groundbreaking portrayals of Batman in the modern era. It has Frank Miller's name attached, and this is one of his finest hours. Batman: Year One also comes highly recommended, but I've not read that in a long while, so go by the words of others on that one.
Green Arrow: Quiver - A reboot of the Green Arrow franchise written by Kevin Smith (Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy), which dusts off a character that was malingering in the minor leagues and pushes him front and centre in the DC universe. Tightly written, quirkily but crisply drawn, this is well worth an indulgence. Follow-up graphic novel collections such as Archer's Quest and The Sound Of Violence are worth investigating, but start here.

Words to remember...... If it feels like a bad idea, it probably is.
I don't care for Gail Simone. I mean oh cool! A girl writing comics with girls! But no they are boring. Journey Into Mystery is good times. I'd like to see that Immonen on Wonder Woman someday.
Anyway I recommend:
Mark Waid's run on the Flash. Geoff John's too if you have time.
Jack Kirby's run on Jimmy Olsen and then the rest of his New Gods work
Silver Age Superman (these are the greatest times anyone can have in a comic)
Vertigo (Technically DC?)
Scalped by Jason Aaron R.M. Guera
100 Bullets by Brian Azzerallo and Eduardo Risso
Unwritten by Mike Carey and Peter Gross
Northlanders by Brian Wood and various artists. It's about vikings and it's perfect.
Other (Also technically DC)
ABC Comics written by Alan Moore, specifically Top Ten and Tom Strong
Ex Machina by Brian K. Vaughn

You've read her "Secret Six," right? Not all her work is great, but her Secret Six run is definitely one of the best in modern comics. I put it right up there with John Ostrander's "Suicide Squad" run, who she even collaborated with for the Blackest Night tie-ins in the series.
Other than that, I agree with your recommendations.
