What happens when everyone in your tournament is a prize shark?
Nicest shark wins!
CarlosMucha: that is like be running in a Olimpic race competition just one step to get the gold and then a Giant children place a mirror in your side and you discover what you are really a hamster over a whell and the gold is just a slice of chess. Avatar Summoning Successes: Original GotG
As jackstar has mentioned, he's not proposing that all venues do this. BNW is a pretty friendly place to play. We have some younger and newer players that have been showing up regularly and we do our best to teach them strategy, power combos, and just overall be a good sport. There's alot of laughing and sassing but overall we're a majority of non-competitive players.
We have experienced players as well and they will bring their heat when it comes down to the IG and any other future special events and that is respected and expected. We're not going to Fellowhip only unless we get a full vote from everyone involved at any of the special events.
Jackstar -Let me know if I'm in the wrong here!
I don't think this prizing format will deter our more competitive folks and I think we can get new players in on this as they realize that the venue leans more toward a more casual and a great learning environment. We actually want people to become better players and that no one person gets all the prizes regularly.
It's all about getting tickets to the Fun Train over at BNW! Toot Tweet!!!!!!!
If you don't have a bunch of competitive players and it's a pretty friendly environment then what is the need for the switch to prizes are Fellowship only? It seems like something you would do if you had a problem with a few competitive players destroying the local player base or have a bunch of players with bad behavior.
The only thing I would worry about now is that people are going to start sucking up to the judges because that's the only way to win prizes and people will start to complain because they felt they deserved Fellowship more then the person that won. Which can lead to a lot of arguments and frustrated players because they feel they are deserving of Fellowship but didn't win or certain people win more then others which then people might think the judge is playing favorites. It could get ugly quick.
We ran a "fellowship first" event at my venue a couple of weeks ago. You were "supposed" to "build a team based on a movie." A few players showed some "creativity" and stuck to teams built around superhero films like "Captain America." Other showed some serious "imagination" and built teams based "actors and actresses" that have been clixed and "appear" in non-superhero movies like "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" or "The Prestige."
"The" players unanimously awarded first "place" to the Doctor Parnassus team"."
"Fellowship First" can "work" in certain "situations."

I hope it works.
Why are we using "quotation marks" around nearly "everything" we "say?"
Wolverine and the X-men is a great opportunity to finish off the X-Force team.
The venue* I co-judge at is going to try something out. It's been controversial in the past, but I wanted to let folks know that we'll be conducting the test of this idea.
What is it?
Simply put: LEs for Fellowship Only
Good attitudes and creatives teams will be rewarded this week, and assuming this week goes well, then this will continue with a few exceptions (maybe selaed games, and IG 8, which we're adjusting to Named Keyword teams from Cap to CW) and our Supremacy League will remain as-is with winners getting those coveted prizes.
I'm not advocating this for all venues, but I believe it's going to work well for the culture we've got going. I hope to be able to report good results and hopefully a few more weeks of this will lead to greater thematic games, less use of the Gauntlet and Gamma Bomb (unless it really fits), and basically the relaxed atmosphere that a lot of our players have requested.
We're putting it to the test. I'll let you know what happens this weekend!

Well, if you're trying to maintain a casual envronment at the request of the players, then this should work out fine. Everyone else has posted the pitfalls that "Fellowship Only" venues could fall into.
My suggestion to avoid them is to put a rule in place that prohibits anyone from winning fellowship more than once in a certain period. Depending on player base and frequency of games of course. Example: 10 or more players, games once a week and a mix of IG and League in addition to venue tourneys, Fellowship may only be rewarded to a player once every month. Helps counter charges of favoritism.
And keep the competative tourneys available for those who live on that sort of thing, or for the occasional casual player who feels like cutting loose.

I really dislike double fellowship. Due to the fact fellowship can some times be given to the same few people at a venue over and over and over. What I suggest is having one fellowship spot and at the end of the event having all the players secret ballot and vote for their favorite team. This way you encourage good sports and creative team building.

All I can say is that I'd like to avoid voting, but I also don't see a problem with the same folks getting a prize a couple weeks in a row if they are the best sport and most creative. The idea is to reward the behavior that we want to see more people model in our venue.
I don't think the same people will be getting it repeatedly, but I'm also comfortable with that potentiality.
I'm a very active judge both in answering questions and keeping an eye on how people play and their attitudes. Then I hand out prizes accordingly.
*I'm not trying to imply that most judges are not doing what I do, but just that I've seen some who are less engaged. I'm not a fan of that type of thing because I think ambassadors for the game need enthusiasm and engagement... but I'm rambling now. I <3 good judges and try to be one.

I believe I mentioned that some games would definitely still reward the winners. I'm not trying to eliminate all competition, but I'd like to scale it back for my group of players. I've seen people exhaustively stress over their "game" and if this can curb that a little so no one has an actual cardiac event, then I figure it's worth trying at least...

If the concern is the "same garbage" week in and week out, then you need to change up the build totals and format, simple as that. We always have different types of formats to try and satisfy all kinds of players and it has been very successful. You just need to be creative and take input from your players.
Examples
"Back to basics" - no special powers, traits, atas, resource dials, bfcs, special objects
"MvC3" - basically plays like the video game (1v1, 3 figures)
"turf war" - 1 named figure, the rest generics
"ziran's tests" - each player gives a ziran's test to their opponent at the beginning of the game
If the concern is the "same garbage" week in and week out, then you need to change up the build totals and format, simple as that.
You gotta believe me that we vary our builds and stipulations constantly and wildly.
In fact, I'm hoping to bring out the 100pt club again soon, (I supply all the 100pt figures and people are assigned a team randomly) I just can't figure out whether to keep using all of them, or stick to Modern now...

The shop did a special event today to try and draw folks who came to see the town's parade. Gave us a chance to give away some extra FCBD figs we've still got and let a few more people know about our weekly game.
We'll see what happens on Saturday.
