Teams from the Longbox: Mephisto vs. Avengers
Teams from the Longbox
FEATURING
Mephisto vs. Avengers

The Mephisto mini-series comes to a conclusion: the devilish one has claimed the soul of Thor, and the ruler of the Asgardian afterlife Hela is not amused!

To see a 900-point force of Avengers assembled to reclaim their teammate, follow the link.

Synopsis: In the last issue Mephisto tricked Rogue into seizing the souls of the X-Men, but it turns out he only wanted Rogue so that she could help him claim the soul of Thor. Thor had been cursed by Hela with an extremely brittle body, albeit one that is denied death. This was part of a ploy to get him to enter her domain willingly. The Living Tribunal makes some bold proclamations about these machinations. Avengersfrom both the East and West Coast unite to do some Avenging:

160 Limited Edition (Supernova 217) Iron Man
139 (Giant-Size X-Men 029) Monica Rambeau
118 (Chaos War 028) Wonder Man
98 (Chaos War 039) Hawkeye
90 (Chaos War 031) Black Knight
93 (Captain America 040) Captain America
75 (Incredible Hulk Fast Forces 003) She-Hulk
57 (Chaos War 036) Tigra
50 (Chaos War Fast Forces 005) Mockingbird
+ 9 x 3 (Additional Team Ability) Avengers Response Unit

= 897 points

The Avengers keyword force I've assembled is dominated by relatively recent versions of HeroClix figures. The one figure I've put on this force that comes from the pre-2007 era of HeroClix is the "New Guy Night" version of Iron Man from Supernova. I picked it because it is the only HeroClix version of the character with the silver armor. More modern versions may serve you better and even cost less points, but this older figure still has some appeal.

All of the other characters on this force also have alternate HeroClix versions to chose from. The Next Wave version of Captain Marvel / Monica Rambeau from Giant Size X-Men doesn't have her Avengers costume like the Sinister REV/LE, but she does have an awesome dial. Rest assured true believers, if there was a Dr. Druid figure in HeroClix, I would have replaced this high point-cost version of Monica with one of her lower cost (but still playable) versions from Sinister to be able to fit him on the force.

Wonder Man's many appearances as a figure in Chaos War surprised me, but one of the solo/non-future versions of the character (from the main booster set) has the jet-belt and pretty much is the version of the character from this comic...minus the ugly costume.

Avengers Two: When Wonder Man is adjacent to a friendly character named Beast, modify both their attack values by +1 if not already modified by this effect.

Jet Belt: Wonder Man can use Charge and possesses the "Wing" symbol.

Chaos War provided many Avengers that can be used on this force, and Hawkeye is another. This is a nasty dial that packs a lot of offense into six clicks of life. Note that this is a prefered version of the character for merge/split (see below). Also note that I've included another character that provides a team ability other than "Avengers" for Hawkeye to copy with his Wild Card Team ability.

Knockout Gas Arrow: Hawkeye can use Energy Explosion. When he does, after actions resolve give one action token to each character hit by the attack.

This version of Black Knight is another figure I would not have guessed would appear in the Chaos War set, but there is no denying the damage dealing potential of this figure. Note that it is a flying figure, but only while not on the Earthbound clicks.

Indestructible Ebony Blade: Black Knight can use Blades/Claws/Fangs and Steal Energy. This power can't be countered.

There are many excellent modern HeroClix dials representing the Steve Rogers Captain America, but I can't help using the shield-flinging version from the Captain America set. The double-base is a bit of drag, but it can be very useful when trying to disrupt opposing forces' positioning. It also allows a little for opportunity to be adjacent to Hawkeye to share the defense values or contribute to the Additional Team Ability's effect.

Captain America's Shield: Captain America begins the game holding The Shield, Captain America can use Super Strength but only to pick up and hold The Shield. Captain America does not use The Shield while making close combat attacks. While The Shield is being held by Captain America, he can use Energy Shield/Deflection and Running Shot.

The Shield (light object): The Shield can't be destroyed, only #CA040 Captain America can hold or pick up The Shield. When used in a ranged attack, Captain America may target two characters and deals 3 damage to each hit character. After any attack using The Shield involves, place it in a square adjacent to a target's square. This object does not count toward your force.

My past laments about the dearth of Red She-Hulk figures in previous Longbox articles does not mean that I do not appreciate the many She-Hulk figures available in HeroClix. For this force, I chose the least costly version which can be found in the Fast Forces set. This version has a very classic HeroClix dial, but it is only 75 points.

Impromptu Shield: She-Hulk can use Invulnerability. If She-Hulk is holding an object, she can also use Energy Shield/Deflection.

Clothesline: She-Hulk can use Charge. When she does and moves along a straight horizontal or vertical path of at least 2 squares, opposing characters she hits are also given an action token.

In HeroClix Tigra had previously been released in the Fantastic Forces set, but I am using the recent version from Chaos War. The older versions are still respectable on offense, so I wouldn't hesitate to use one of them instead of this version if extra points are needed.

You're Just Another Pretty Little Bird To Me: Tigra can use Charge and Flurry.

Kitten Has Claws: Tigra can use Blades/Claws/Fangs, but the minimum result of her d6 roll is 2 and her maximum result is 5.

Like Tigra above, the previous HeroClix Mockingbird figures (from Sinister) are quite good for the points. The most recent version from the Chaos War Fast Forces set is preferred because of the Merge/Split potential. This figure also has a 25-point starting line, but starting with that version on the force you would not allow Merging with Hawkeye into the duo.

E Mockingbird Points: 50 Range: 2

October 12th: When a friendly character named Hawkeye is adjacent to Mockingbird, they both modify their attack values by +1 if not already modified by this effect.

The duo-figure mechanic is not one that had much appreciation prior to Chaos War...but the Merge/Split mechanic has changed all that. I don't recommend starting with this duo: it will confuse things with the Additional Team Ability (only one of the Split figures can get it), and you are more likely to need some potential healing or a simple extension of the solo dials beyond 5 or 6 clicks.

The Sharpest: Hawkeye and Mockingbird can use the Sharpshooter ability. Opposing characters within 8 squares can't use the Sharpshooter ability.

Trick Arrows and Battle Staves: Hawkeye and Mockingbird can use Energy Explosion, Incapaciatate, and Smoke Cloud. They can use these powers normally, or use them as free actions instead of ranged combat attacks when using the Duo Attack ability.

Watch Each Other's Back: Hawkeye and Mockingbird can use Combat Reflexes and Super Senses.

Since this is a 9-figure, 900-point force I think it is likely that there will be some close combat. This Additional Team Ability is also quite useful for teams with TAXI figures. Note that it will not help Sharpshooter attacks of any kind.

AVENGERS RESPONSE UNIT
Cost:
3 per character Prerequisite Keyword: Avengers

When one or more characters using this team ability is adjacent to a friendly character making a close combat attack, modify the characters attack value by +1.

The only missing character from this force is Dr. Druid, who hasn't been made (yet, ever) in HeroClix. The 'antagonists' of this issue were Hela and Mephisto, with a guest appearance by the Living Tribunal. The X-Men's Rogue also had a small part as an ineffective agent of Mephisto, so she could be on an opposing force for this team.

If you use the 600-point Galactic Guardians Dormammu as 'Mephisto', you can use the Unique Secret Invasion Mephisto as a weaker projection of himself, and add the Giant Size X-Men Rogue as an 873-point force to oppose this Avengers team.

Thanks for reading, more Teams from the Longbox can be found here.

After Sentry and Void and Avengers Prime (two game-altering figures), Hawkeye and Mockingbird seem to get the most press on HCRealms. I think this is due to the relatively low point cost of the duo and the fact that the two most natural solo figures to use with it are excellent. The fact that the duo extends the life of the individual figures (and is nothing the laugh at) seals the deal.

The Merge/Split mechanic has put life into the duo mechanic that just was not there. Most older duos have become more playable, and newer figures that would otherwise be dead weight are relevant. I am not a fan of rules extensions (either the original duo or the Merge/Split) but the second has really improved the first.

I read this comic too. I hope a Dr. Druid gets made soon; we could have had 1 less Iron Man, Thor, Cap, or Hulk to have him instead by now.

Jack & Ten and King & Queen would like to disagree with you there. I think I hear Hawk & Dove in there somewhere too.

I do like the team, though. I remember that Iron Man being a pain to deal with back when he first came out. Kind of like the NGN Superman for Collateral Damage; just plain mean.
