My good deed (but don't tell my Venue)
Just wanted to share a recent good deed that I did for a couple of younger, new heroclix players.

I went into my venue last week and saw 2 kids (about 8 &10) scrimping their few dollars and change together over at the heroclix case and looking at all the nons and Us the owner had for sale. TO be blunt, the owner doesnt know much about clix, and really doesnt care to know much about clix, so all his stuff is waayy over-priced (IE IC Cyclops U for $15).

When he went away to wait on another customer I took the opprotunity to approach those kids when he wasnt in earshot. I told the mom and the kids to not waste their $ on singles, all they needed to do was buy the Starter set and the Sentinel fig if they wanted to and to meet me back outside the store the following night....I told them I had a ton of dupes they could have ONLY if the 2 brothers promissed to play together nice. The mom was at first scepticle but I explained that I had 2 younger brother growing up and her sons reminded me of them in my younger days.

Thankfully they showed up, and I gave them every extra I had, which spanned every set, and at least 1 figure from each sculpt (minus the Us of course). It felt good to do something nice for those kids, who didnt have but about $15-19 between them....AND to kind of stick it to the shop owner who was about to rape those kids on prices.

Just wanted to share.

IC Cyclops for $15? That's a STEAL!

Your poor venue owner is already cutting his throat with rock bottom prices and you have to go and play him?

For shame man, for shame.

I'm telling you new guys--show up to the tournaments. Don't be intimidated. Most of us are cool like that. I've probably given away more figs than I have in my collection, even before the bad distribution days.

I wonder if that makes up for punting your brother when he traded away a figure you wanted, and begging for money on the 'realms.

Honestly, who here -hasn't- looked at their REV dupes and realized it's better to give them to someone who'll use them?

You did the right thing. Good to know there are still nice people in the world.

Someone should have a chat with the owner about value of clicks, to prevent such (unintentional?) robbery.

Best NGN event.

Bring in your Box O' Dupes

Have players roll for line order.

Each player gets to pick 6 figs.
1st fig - 30 seconds
2nd fig - 25
3rd fig - 20
4th fig - 15
5th fig - 10
6th fig - 5

That is their team. And, you get to keep the figs you pulled. Often the vet players will give their figs to the new players too, so it's a great way to get rid of them and to get new players started off with some figures.

I agree completely! The first event I brought my 11 year old to, he was starting his interest in HC. He left the venue that night with like 50 free Clixs that other players had dups of. Everybody was great to him and just made him more interested and excited about the game. Now he's hooked. All thanks to the great people that play this game.

I actually got started on Heroclix when my brother-in-law gave me all of his dupes. I then passed on all of my dupes to two other guys who have done the same. My town does not have any venues, but I always have people to play with. I think starting people out with dupes is a good way to introduce people to the game.

I've seen this scenario way too many times. The thing is though, since the prices are so inflated, it's not usually the players (young or otherwise) that get the "robbery"; it's usually the store instead since the prices are too high to actually sell any of the singles.

Its true i have a bin of figs that if a new person shows up i let them take 5-10 (or more if they are nice kids) and keep them

And good on you qc_mohawks for giving some kids a chance to experience this game without blowing their allowances
quit calling web tokens objects dammit, they cannot be carried and have no "unique game effect" they are nothing more then sculpted "Special" cardboard squares

I am always a fan of starting off new players by giving them my duplicates that do nothing but take up space in my garage. I try to be delicate about it at my venue though. My shop owner is great to me and to all of the regular heroclix players. He sells single heroclix and I don't want to be stealing business from him by giving away all of the stuff he is selling. On the other hand, I want new players to have access to enough pieces to ensure they'll keep trying to learn the game. Ususally, there is a happy medium to find and the owner also understands that if my free giveaways get the person into playing and/or collecting heroclix he will probably make them more money long term

I've been trying to interest my friends son in the game by giving him a starter set and slowly giving him a handful of dupes everytime he comes back to play again... But I was feeling terrible when I found out he had bought some more pieces on Ebay, spending like $30 after shipping for about 20 figures I would have given him for free. I told him to hold off on ebay unless there was a figure he knew I couldn't give him that he really, really wanted.
