The Trophy Room: Donna Troy
ol_Dut's LE Review: Donna Troy
by Justin Dekker

Crisis boosters gave us a Rookie and a Veteran Wonder Girl, but much to my dismay, no Wonder Woman. Now, just for good measure here comes LE Donna Troy who serves as the Experienced version of Wonder Girl to try and prove that like celebrity deaths, good things came come in threes as well. Does it work out or should Donna Troy get tied up with a golden lasso and remain unplayed for all of her days? Click on “Read More” to find out!

Here's the dial for LE Donna Troy.

Purple Ray: Donna Troy can use Support, but can treat friendly characters 3 or fewer squares away as if they were adjacent.
Lasso: Donna Troy can use Incapacitate as if she had a range value of 6. If she successfully hits a target with a ranged combat attack when using Incapacitate, after resolving the action you can put the target in an unoccupied square of clear terrain adjacent to and at the same elevation as Wonder Girl.

And here is what Rookie Wonder Girl has going on.

LE Donna Troy’s Gains vs. Rookie Wonder Girl
That twenty point increase may seem like a big deal, but Donna packs a host of upgrades into her dial for those 80 points. For starters, she adds one click of life over the Rookie. She not only acquires three clicks of Flurry, but also three of “Purple Ray” a special power that lets her heal teammates from up to three squares away. She also gains one more click of the gimmicky but useful “Lasso” special power. Her list of additions come to a close with two more clicks of Combat Reflexes and two 17 defense clicks.

LE Donna Troy’s Losses vs. Rookie Wonder Girl
Donna Troy’s losses consist of nothing more than one less click of Toughness than the Rookie Wonder Girl. That’s it. Usually there’s a lot more to say here, but I’d have to lie to make that work which I’m not going to do. The dial is what it is. Completely unrelated to anything, I finally got around to seeing “Hostel II”. It seemed alright but it wasn’t as scary or as gory as it should have been, not by a long shot. There were a lot of missed opportunities. “P2” on the other hand was a delight from start to finish, and if you haven’t seen “The Host” yet, after you get done reading the rest of this review, scurry off to your video store of choice and either buy or rent that thing. Other than that, this week I have purchased a great deal of vegetables, spent a lot time working on elder care issues and I dang near got my nose while sparring at Karate. I also need a haircut, a drink and a snack but not necessarily in that order and none of them are going to get resolved in the next 20 minutes anyway so what does it matter? Also, we’re supposed to get snow tonight. Yipee. So there, now you’re all caught up with me. How are you all doing?

Neutral Dial Tinkering
Here there’s a little bit more to say, but not much more. The LE has Charge on her second click instead of the first like Rookie Wonder Girl. Toughness leads off for Donna which then fades to Combat Reflexes, while the inverse is true for Wonder Girl. Finally, Donna opens with two (2) damage to start and then gets some threes (3s) instead of starting with threes (3s) and then fading to twos (2s) like Rookie. Look at that! Three whole things!

If ol_Dut had to Choose
LE Donna Troy vs. Rookie Wonder Girl? While I greatly miss the lead-off click of Charge, I dig LE Donna Troy and here’s why. Donna is one of a group of very rare dual purpose figures. For the first half of her dial, she’s a rounder pure and simple. Donna is made to move in on a foe and start the punishment. First she grabs an object and moves up next to whomever she wants to crush – preferably someone with an action token. The next round she pushes to Flurry, handing out four (4) clicks of damage on her first attack (assuming she had a heavy object) and two (2) on her second attack. That push leaves her attack and defense numbers unchanged but puts her onto three (3) damage and Charge. One extra click of the “Lasso” special power is handy also as it allow her to not only Incapacitate an opposing figure but reposition them as well making her an excellent choice to go after Mastermind fodder.

For the last half of her dial, Donna is all about helping the team with her “Purple Ray”. Similar to Lex Luthor’s (JL) ability to Mastermind damage at a distance, “Purple Ray” enables Donna to heal a friendly figure from three squares away. Since the power itself says nothing about having a line of fire to the target friendly figure, it may be possible for that power to work not only through walls, but through Stealth as well. And that little dose of Flurry at the end of her dial is just what the doctor ordered to make opponents think twice about picking on the medic. This Amazon is no helpless and hopeless Jane Foster back row nurse. However, if ever there were a figure with a power named “Orange Julius”, I would not advocate thinking twice about anything but just basing them immediately and demanding some delicious fruity drinks. And it should also be noted that figures with the “Purple Rain” special power must be allowed to “go crazy”, wear frilly jumpsuits, live like a hermit, and must always, always be allowed to win at basketball while doves cry after pretending to be married to your momma, your sister and/or your girlfriend and doing certain unmentionable things in a hotel lobby among other places for a couple of hours or the next seven years.

I cannot understate how much I miss the Rookie’s opening click of Charge with three (3) damage and Super Strength, but where Rookie Wonder Girl feels like a use once and discard piece, Donna Troy’s evolution throughout the course of the game makes her a constant threat. If she can’t beat on someone for some respectable damage, she’s going to be able to heal up her friends. No matter what click she’s on, the person across the table is going to have to account for her in some way. And in the end, that’s what makes her a great figure and why the impossible to ignore LE Donna Troy is going to be my choice every single time.

Quick and Dirty Price Tag
Donna is not holding value at all despite her utility. She can be yours for $15 or less, and it's usually less.

That's all for this week, Next up is Garth! Thanks for reading!

I like Donna Troy, but is it true that Purple ray can support through walls?

Awesome post! I love reading these things, and I pretty much agree with you about everything. I fielded my LE for the first time this week and she did pretty decently.

I'm waiting to use her until I get Jason Todd The Boy Blunder. That weekend I will use all of the LE Titans together just for the hell of it. It's gonna be great! Besides I think the Teen Titans needed their own healer because JSA has Dr. Midnite and JLA has...Aquaman? lol Anyways DC super teams need a healer if they are popular right? haha jk.

Right now it looks like it. Purple Ray doesn't say it requires LoF to the target. It also is worded so Donna could use it on herself. She is 3 or fewer squares from herself. So she is a legal target.

Yeah, but it says she can use support. Support has to target an adjacent friendly character. If support wording would allow it, then yes, but the power itself doesn't.
I'm avatar-changing ignorant. So here's my Ghost Rider 2099 sig. Happy trails, zero.

See, I'm not seeing the benefit of Purple Ray at all. To use Support, the healer and the target cannot have an opposing fig adjacent to either of them, right? Well, Donna's purely a close combat piece with no range value, so unless you move her up, that's 80 points of meat shield. She has a special power that drags opposing figures adjacent to her. Also helpful considering her close combat-oriented dial, but at what point do you ever expect to use Support? The potential to use Support means you have to take her out when she lands on it, but it's a 16 defense at range. Is there anyone who can't hit that anymore?

Two thumbs down to Donna Troy.

Very true. Support requires that you make an attack on a friendly target adjacent to the supporter. As Donna is the supporter, she wouldn't be able to heal herself, although the Purple Ray SP combined with the Titan's TA really make for an intersting combination.

Remember, too, that for Support to work, the target can not be engaged with an opposing figure. They may be 3 or fewer squares away, but it is rendered useless if they are in combat with someone else. For the wording, I would imagine that Line of Sight (Line of Fire, whatever you wanna call it) would not be an issue so long as the afore mentioned pre-requisites are met.

Aside from all of that, Donna Troy seems like a good investment for 80 points, especially when you consider she can be used on three viable theme teams.

I still can't believe that advertised Wonder Woman in the Crisis announcement and we didn't get one.

Donna LE is okay...I miss that first click charge and the way I'd use her, she'd be based with somebody so the Support likely wouldn't work. A little bit overpriced for points and dollars at this time, I'm not in any hurry to pick one up.

The LE's are ok Wallie being the best so far I think. I won The Speedy today and traded for an Iron Spiderman. Mainly, I think the Sculpts are lamo. Their powers are ok at best(free force blast excluded) that power is nice. Pair up manuver with his free force blast and you can do all sorts of things. Like knock into a wall, off a building, into the open...
