Best Bets And Long Shots: May 21st.

How It Works

Every Wednesday, I choose a few from Diamond’s list of new releases for the week, and I’ll do my best to explain why they might represent your best bets at finding some value for your comics-buying dollar.

Keep in mind, I haven’t read these comics either (usually). That’s part of the fun!

Preview: CASEY BLUE: BEYOND TOMORROW #1 (DC Comics) - The solicitations call this book "a dangerous, thrilling action-packed adventure in which a young woman rapidly comes to terms with her strange, incredible new life!"

The solicits continue: "Casey Blue is an average high school senior — she studies hard with an eye toward college, enjoys extracurricular sports, and likes spending time with friends and family...until the moment she savagely murders a stranger with her bare hands, leading to revelations about her role in preventing a full-scale invasion of earth! The only problem? She has no idea she's humanity's salvation!"

Given writer B. Clay Moore's mastery of the high concept, as evidenced by excellent books like Hawaiian Dick and The Leading Man, the, er, opacity of the solicitation copy is a little surprising. I'm not entirely certain of where Moore intends to take readers with this book, but his reputation for delivering engaging comics, along with the slick art by Carlo Barberi (Gen13), leaves me curious enough to snag the first issue. Odds: 5-1.

Preview: TWILIGHT GUARDIAN #1 (Image Comics/Top Cow) - I have a soft spot for "realistic" looks at superheroics, and I have a soft spot for interesting marketing concepts. This is the first release in Top Cow's 2008 Pilot Season, in which readers vote for their favorite book from among six one-shot issues. The top two vote getters will earn an ongoing series later this year.

The solicitations call Twilight Guardian "the hero who could be you! Eisner nominee Troy Hickman (Common Grounds) brings you more of his unique view of the superhero genre, with stunning artwork by Reza. Enter the world of the Twilight Guardian and the nine-block area she patrols each night, a world of everyday intrigue, brown and green gargantuas, marital aids, and yes, donut shops. Superheroics meets slice-of-life as you’ve never seen before!"

I do not, however, have a soft spot for the $3.99 cover price. Odds: 6-1.
