Welcome back to DEEP DISH THEMES! For those of you who are first time readers, what I do here is take one figure and examine all versions of it and give you an in depth look at all of the things that make that character either great or horrible and all steps in between.
I grade things like keywords, team abilites, range, targets, dial, point value, and even a current estimated monetary value of the figure. I rate the figure on a 10 star rating system and average out the ratings at the end to give you my overall evaluation of the figure. I try to look at the different ratings from the perspective of the average player and, by that, I mean someone who doesn't have every single figure and maybe has to pick and choose what versions of characters that they want to pick up.
I then delve even further each character with an overall synopsis of each figure and what role or roles that it may play in your games and/or theme teams. I wrap it all up by suggesting several comic accurate and keyword accurate theme teams that you can use the week's selected character in and give my pick for each one.
This time around I will be reviewing somebody who is always with a smile on her face and mallet in hand. That's right, I am talking about Harley Quinn! She's the sidekick/gal pal of the notorious Joker, and this week we will be examining every version of her from Hypertime to Brave and the Bold.
(The Joker featured in the picture above is none other than my own brother THEAVENGERTHOR and Harley Quinn is his wife/my sister in law Annette)

Origin:Harley Quinn first appeared in the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Joker's Favor", as what was originally supposed to be the animated equivalent of a walk-on role; a number of police officers were to be taken hostage by someone jumping out of a cake, and it was decided that to have the Joker do so himself would be too bizarre (although he ended up doing so anyway). Dini thus created a female sidekick for the Joker.
The 1994 graphic novel Mad Love recounts the character's origin. Told in the style and continuity of Batman: The Animated Series and written and drawn by Dini and Timm, the comic book describes Harley as an Arkham Asylum psychologist who falls for the Joker and becomes his accomplice and on-off sidekick/lover. She becomes fascinated with the Joker while interning at Arkham, and volunteers to analyze him. She falls hopelessly in love nearly instantly with the Joker during their sessions, and she helps him escape from the asylum more than once. When the Joker is returned to Arkham after a battle with Batman, the sight of her badly injured patient drives Harley to don the costume and become Harley Quinn, the Joker's sidekick and on/off girlfriend. She later becomes fast friends with Poison Ivy, who injects her with antitoxins to give her the same immunity to poisons she has.

Toxic Immunity Serum: Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy and friendly characters within 6 squares ignore damage dealt by Poison.
Reclaiming the Land for Nature : Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy can use Poison and Smoke Cloud. When hindering terrain markers placed by Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy are removed at the beginning of your turn, you may destroy one wall or square of blocking terrain adjacent to at least one of the markers.
Ladies' Choice: Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy can use Toughness and Combat Reflexes.
Mayhem - Harley Style : Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy can use Outwit, but after targeting an opposing character, roll a d6. On a result of 1, this power has no effect. On a result of 2-3, counter one power as normal. On a result of 4-6, counter two powers instead.

I want to love this piece. I mean I REALLY want to love this piece. However, it's far too fragile for something that costs over half of the build total. Yes, you can build a force around it and I have seen the piece used extremely sucessfully. It' my opinion though, that it only worked out as well as it did because all of the planets alligned just perfectly for the player who was using this duo on that day. The things this piece does have going for it is that it was designed to support a team of figures of lesser value. It could be a great swarm team centerpiece. It has a little bit of move and attack ability and is mixed with stealth to keep itself protected and keeps pieces coming to it to hopefully get caught by it's poison. It has some support powers to use to help out itself or it's team and some end dial regeneration to heal damage if necessary.

This is a great figure. She didn't merrit an extremely high rating because she doesn't tend to last that long and any character with toughness or better can base her and effectively render her useless. Also, the ranged combat expert with only a four range can be less than helpful at times. However, if you can even suprise one opponent with that ranged combat expert or use her as a tie up piece assuming you can even somewhat rely on super senses rolls, she has been totally worth the low low cost of 30 points. She is also effective for keeping in hindering terrain as mobile blocking terrain for characters that don't have stealth of their own.

She's a nice little package for just 21 points. Her four range energy explosion may never even come up, but it's there if you just absolutely have to 'splode something. She's not the ideal figure to borrow an attack value from using the Batman Enemy team ability, but in a pinch, a 9 attack value isn't anything to sneeze at. She's not the cornerstone of a team, but at 21 points, what do you expect? If anything, she is somebody who can use your theme team rerolls with so your main attackers don't have to take unnecessary actions.

If you want a good cheap Harley Quinn to fill a support role in your team and you don't care that she's not really going to provide any other role but that of a perplexer, then this is the piece for you. She only has one click of perplex so use it wisely because if she takes ANY damage and happens to live from it, she's only worth her weight as a tie up piece for the one more hit it will take to KO her.

Her team ability is making her cost more points than would normally be spent on a character that is basically only on your team for the extra support that perplex offers. She is not going to be increasing anybody's attack with it more than likely, and if she get's an attack boost, she's not going to be offering much in the way of damage. That all being said, with her Gotham City key word, it leaves her as a viable option even in today's game given the bevvy of great Gotham City characters out there. However, don't expect her to last long or add anything other than the previously mentioned support position. I would play the rookie over this version since she offers the same thing at less points.

With the slight bump in damage up front, she could take a few pot shots at your opponent if need be. The same thing goes for her and her team ability that goes for thr Rookie and Experienced levels, though. She is not going to be the character to huddle around to gain an attack boost. This version adds a click of Outwit at the end of her dial so she can provide even more support to your team than the Rookie or Experienced levels, though. Also, since she has both perplex and outwit she is elligible for the Brilliant Tactician feat in sealed games. This makes her one of the cheapest characters elligible for this amazingly beneficial feat in golden age games. Once again, she is a great support piece, but don't expect a lot more out of her than that.

Basically apply everything that I said about the Veteran to this dial. There are a few major differences when you compare this version to the Veteran, though. This version starts out with incapacitate instead of smoke cloud. It's not a huge difference, but it could come in handy in a pinch and if you need to slow a character down. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the fact that this version also sports an 8 range instead of the 6 average that other versions have. Finally, she sports the scientist keyword which opens her usefulness up to other kind of teams other than those of Gotham City.
Now that we've reviewed all of the Harley Quinn figures individually, let's look at what teams they would work best for. There are a small handful of keywords that they have to choose from, and here is the breakdown of who would be the best choice for each one:

Emphasis mine. In my experience she always lasts a very long time. Nobody likes to take the time to move up to her and then take the action to attack her to get a very small number of points and possibly waste even more time if she gets her Super Senses once or more. Super Senses is a great deterrent on a small figure because it means your more expensive figures could end up wasting a lot of time for little benefit. Statistically they probably won't, but in practice people often don't want to take the risk.
I've often seen this particular Harley Quinn used as a companion to a flying Hypersonic figure or a transporter, who can pull her out of adjacency to keep her RCE going and use her to block line of fire. She can fire off a shot before they carry her for a reasonable chance of doing pretty decent damage, and in my opinion her Super Senses makes her one of the better "mobile blocking terrain" pieces in the game.
Anyway, what I'm saying is, I disagree with your rating.

I love playing the Alpha version with supressive fire. It brings a whole new dimention to her play. I wish that the feat was a 50/50 shot as opposed to only having a 33% chance at working, but it can be used effectively. Then you feed Harley to CPOC or another Gotham Mastermind.
...And I thought that was Cary Elwes in Joker make-up. I was about to scream, "Christopher Nolan has lost his mind!"
I had no idea I looked like Cary Elwes.

Great article. I love these deep dish reviews, mmm...deep dish pizza...mmm..... Sorry, Im hungry now for some odd reason.. Personally, my fav is the alpha version. A nice little bundle of crazy for 30 points.
I would like to request a Kyle Rayner review if I may. Thanks.
