While we are getting the umpteenth version of Superman, Batman and some color or other of Lantern, there are still oh so many more or less popular characters out there that are still waiting impatiently for their Heroclix debut.

Today I will be talking about a little guy who made it big-- Titano!!

Back in the crazy days of the Silver Age, I imagine some editor's meeting went like this:

Writer: We should have Superman fight King Kong!
Editor: We don't have the rights. We'll have to create our own.
Writer: No problem. We'll call him "Titano!"
Editor: But Superman could beat King Kong with no trouble.
Writer: We'll give him Kryptonite Vision!
Editor: Perfect!

And thus, I imagine, Titano was born. A harmless but extremely bright ape, exposed to radiation (or course!) named Toto grows to tremendous size, gains Kryptonite vision, and goes on a rampage. Lois Lane, who bonded with Toto before the accident, is the only one who can calm him down.

Post-crisis Titano showed up in a couple of less-innocent incarnations, with darker storylines, but the essentials are the same-- Giant Ape, Kryptonite Vision.


Why clix him? DC needs Colossal Figures! Also, it never hurts to inject a little of the light-heartedness of the Silver Age into clix. Plus, who doesn't want a colossal ape figure in clix?

Who would he play with?

As a colossal, he might well play alone. However, he'd also make a great centerpiece to an all-ape-family team. You could do it universe-specific and have Mallah, Congorilla, Solivar, Grodd and Gorilla City Warriors. Or go cross-universe and include Ken Hale and the Super Apes!

He'd also fit into all manner of Animal teams in general.

And of course, he could also be a pawn of a gaggle of Superman enemies.

Here he comes! (Charge)
Revert to Toto (Earthbound)
Massive strength (Super Strength)
Too big to fall (Impervious)
Hard to hurt (Invulnerable)

I would give him a special power for the Kryptoniote Vision. Either a trait that effects Kryptonians, or a special power that gives him range, but only to affect Kryptonians.

I wouldn't give him any TA, and certainly not Superman Enemy-- he's not that smart!

Very cool article! I'm a huge fan of DC's golden and silver age. A colossal from this era would be mint! Maybe now that they're introducing vehicles like the batmobile, we might see a brainiac skull ship.

Isn't that the Hulk dial from the Target Avengers clix? (I would lose the Supes ally TA)

They should clix him. More Superman villains are needed. I think that dial would have to cost 300. All of the charge, super strength, and impervious costs a lot.

I'd go with colossal rather than Giant and I don't see the point of Battle Fury (why not let him throw objects?). I'd also go with a trait or Special Power that gives him eight range Penetrating/Psy Blast against Kryptonians/figures named "Superman".

I'm sure we could also get a bit more creative too.
They were clearly mimicking King Kong swatting at planes, how about giving Titano a bonus against anyone who can use the Flight ability if he occupies elevated terrain?

It is in fact, the dial for the AVM/"Target" Hulk, with "Superman Ally" subbing for the "Avengers Initiative", and I hid the special white movement power by only listing the part of it that allows the use of Charge.

It's a perfectly fine substitute dial as far as I'm concerned. Sure it misses anything like 'Kryptonite eye beams', and has the eternal drawback of Battle Fury preventing the throwing of objects, but until we get an actual version of the character (I've been asking for one since the 2002 Sentinels appeared) I think this dial is great for Titano.

I would rather see King Kong made but I would like them to model the sculpt for Titano to look like this:

If they put a Titano in the Super Boosters for DC, I will happily buy him.

He'd be a great addition to my Ape Army.

I agree with some kind of range power against Superman Allies.
