Greetings everyone, and welcome to a very special edition of Comic Accurate! Today, we're kicking off HCRealms' exclusive previews of the Chaos War Counter Top Display microset! And our first preview is none other than Spider-Woman!
Spider-Woman, aka Jessica Drew, debuted in Marvel Spotlight #32 back in 1977. Not long after, she got her own series and her own cartoon. It was around the mid-80's though when her book came to an end and she spent a lot of time in limbo, making cameo appearances here and there until the mid-2000's when she was brought back as a part of the New Avengers. At least we thought so anyways. Turned out it was a Skrull, but the real deal is currently a member to this day.
Wizkids was courteous enough to provide us at HCRealms with her dial and card information, but it'll be released when the Chaos War 10 figure "micro" set (sold in single figure boosters, MSRP $2.99) comes out at your local game stores starting on June 27th. We're going to use Jessica here as our centerpiece for several teams that go back through her history! But first, let's look at her dial!
A trait that gives her Leap/Climb, which combined with her top dial Stealth makes her mobile and sneaky. If your opponent decides to get up close to deal with her? They have to deal with her Super Senses and then Combat Reflexes! She's got a nice solid attack value starting out and she could even crack opposing Impervious defenses with her damage value. Add in a choice of Hydra or SHIELD for her second team ability and Jessica is a bargain for only 55 points!
Alicia Monster: Not even invisible balls can stop her!
So let's start out the teams that'll be using this cost-effective piece waaaaaaaay back in the day. In one of Jessica's appearances before she even had her own title, a story from Marvel Two-In-One #32. The Thing, Invisible Woman and Spider-Woman (then a part of HYDRA) were battling a mutated Alicia Masters.
More Than Human: Spider-Woman can use Leap/Climb. Double Agent: At the beginning of the game, choose either Hydra or S.H.I.E.L.D. Spider-Woman can use that team ability this game.

(Damage) Had Enough Clobberin' Yet?: Each time an opposing character takes damage from Thing's close combat attack, after actions resolve, that character's owner chooses one: 1) Deal that character 1 unavoidable damage; or 2) Thing may immediately make another close combat attack targeting that character as a free action. (If that character takes damage from this attack, Thing may activate this power again.)

(Speed) Invisible: Any character that is 7 or more squares from the Invisible Woman can't draw a line of fire to her. (Defense) Force Fields: Invisible Woman can use Barrier and Invulnerability.
Altogether, this trio comes out to 295 points. Throw on Unstoppable and Sue can TK Thing out and go right for an attack, while Spider-Woman can Hydra her opponent's defense down, helping Invisible Woman with an RCE attack.
The X-Men acted quickly to try and stop Jessica's Cher impression
A couple years later, once she left Hydra and got her own series, Jessica would team up with The X-Men. A small grouping of them at least, in Spider-Woman #38 as they fight Juggernaut, Black Tom Cassidy and Siryn (her debut appearance). So taking our new Chaos War CTD figure, we group her with the following...
(Damage) Fastball Special: Colossus can use Telekinesis, but only Option 3. When using Telekinesis, Colossus can treat any adjacent friendly character that has a point value more than 30 and the Starburst damage symbol as if it were a light object. but the character is not destroyed in the attack. After the attack is resolved, modify the character's attack value and damage value by -2 until the end of the turn, deal it 1 unavoidable damage, and place it in the square nearest to the target to which Colossus has a clear line of fire. If the square is not adjacent to the target, deal the character 1 additional unavoidable damage.
This group comes out to 349 points. The beauty here is if we put the GSX version of Juggernaut with the Siryn and Black Tom figures, they come out to 342 points! So whether you decide to play the teams straight up or load 'em all with enough game elements to get them to 400, it's still a pretty even pair of teams for you and a friend to play in a fun home game!
The Avengers have faced every kind of threat, but were still unprepared for changing bedpans.
But Jessica's series eventually came to an end. Those final issues of her series crossing over into The Avengers, specifically issue #240, where Jessica laid in a coma, her spirit haunting her friends. So Tigra called in the rest of the Avengers, along with Hank Pym and Dr. Strange to help try and bring her out of it.

(Special) Eye of Agamatto: Dr. Strange ignores the effects of characters and hindering terrain (including team abilities that give hindering terrain bonuses) when determining line of fire. (Speed) Winds of Watoomb: Dr. Strange can use Phasing/Teleport and Quake. (Damage) Wand of Watoomb: Dr. Strange can use Perplex. Those eight Avengers along with our Spider-Woman figure, place our build exactly at 700 points! Plus, you have the bonus of having a named theme team. It should be mentioned of course, that The Shroud also appeared in that issue, but if you want to include him, just repaint a Cloak or Moon Knight and up the build. Whatever works for you.
Now after Jessica's book ended, she had more or less "retired" from active superhero-ing. The mantle of Spider-Woman ended up being passed on to Julia Carpenter (and then on after that to Mattie Franklin). So Jessica spent several years appearing as a guest star in X-Men and then more notably in Wolverine's book as she spent some time with him in Madripoor. So if you can find a Wolverine/Logan/Patch figure that's either less than 45 points or at least enough points to not leave you too under on a 200 point team, then enjoy.
*Sigh*... The series just wasn't the same after Bradley Cooper left.
Eventually, it came time for Spider-Woman to start mounting a comeback, and it happened in the pages of another Jessica's book. In Alias #20, Jessica Drew and Jessica Jones reluctantly team up to search for the then-current Spider-Woman Mattie Franklin. Even more reluctantly, they run into Speedball.

(Speed) Bounce: Speedball can use Charge and Leap/Climb, and automatically breaks away. (Attack) Speedball Effect: Once per turn, if Speedball defeats an opposing character or hits an opposing character with doubles, after the attack resolves he can break away automatically, immediately move up to his full speed value, and make one close combat attack against a different opposing character as a free action.
The two Jessicas come out to 100 points on the nose. Play them in a quickie game or add in Speedball and you've got 177 points. That'd give you either three SHIELD characters or three Hydra and twenty points for feats. Swingline for Speedball and maybe two Lunges for the Jessicas would probably be my choices, though your milage may vary.
After that, Jessica returned full-time as Spider-Woman in the pages of New Avengers and Mighty Avengers. As we mentioned earlier, she was a Skrull for those early runs, but you can play our new Chaos War piece under the pretense that it's when no one knew. But those New Avengers and Mighty Avengers lineups which will probably be large builds, might be best left for another article unto themselves.
That leaves us in (relatively) present day. After the Secret Invasion ended, the real Spider-Woman was on the hunt for Skrulls as a member of her short-lived Agent of Sword series, aided by Agent Brand.
Brand and Spider-Woman together come out to a nice stealthy 99 point team!
That brings us to the end of our look back at some teams we can build around our new Spider-Woman. And thanks again to Wizkids for helping us launch the Chaos War CTD previews! Come back this Thursday as we spotlight a wacko that has been both friend and foe to the Avengers through the years.
There was a short period where she was depicted as practically having "body paint" instead of a costume! (see illustration in first post)
I wonder if it helped sales?
It certainly got my attention!

Nice article............and yay CTD previews!
Love Jess, happy to see an nice economic dial for her which will help alot in team building.
It is almost upon us! Are you prepared for the Quarmageddon?
I think the second team is neat, too bad Hank Pym breaks the named keywords theme though. I'm confident the new Pym in Chaos War would be a good choice if points permit.
I'm finding this version of Jessica Drew kinda bland. The Armor War ones are much better IMO in terms of power choices (though I do like the trait Leap/Climb and she finally has stealth... being a spy and all). But the numbers are definitely better on this version. Perhaps the main set version will have a combination of both.
Wow, I wasn't expecting this! I'm glad I decided to give this thread a read. I've been waiting forever for a new Jessica, and this one doesn't disappoint! Can't wait to see more Chaos War previews.
