View Poll Results: completionist vs. functionalist: the real conflict of the game
Well, over the past year (like many others have already stated) I have gone from SET completist, to Team Completist, to now mostly just my favorites ... although, I really don't think it's as black and white as that. I know that with GG I had relatively less interest in the set than normal. I'm sure I will move back up to a Team Completist with the Batman and Justice League sets.
So, is there any option for a "Waffler" in this poll?? Lol
I know...I thought I had all the bases covered! I've brought much shame to the werker family name in the commission of this error.
Such a rookie mistake to forget the waffling. Dammit now i gotta do Sepuku.

But seriously I'm in the same boat, same deck, same view when it comes to wanting to get the Batman and Justice League set. It looks very premium so far. I'm hoping they don't screw it up somehow.
I only collect what I need; and I'm seriously considering a system where competitive players can just rent the teams they need and not even buy figures. I used to be a hardcore collector, but then some limited figure (can't remember which one) came out, and something in my changed. I stopped buying cases at that point and began liquidating my pieces (except for competitive figures cool sculpts). I think I went 4 years without buying any sealed product.
I did just recently buy a case each of the last two sets ... but after seeing the CreatorClix that are limited to just SDCC, I'm over it. WizKids is flooding the market like they know the ship is sinking and need to make as much money as possible before consumers start seeing the signs.

While you know better than me. IMHO, I think this DC "drought" had alot to do with this year and the appearance of flooding.
I think they have a long term schedule to keep and if they run into license holder issues they just keep on keeping on. They can't neglect Marvel releases or vice versa. If they stretched the Marvel sets out this year the DC sets would be sometime fiscal quarter 1 next year with a possibly 18 month gap...?
I dont need 7 copies of Batman when one will due unless he really adds something to the character that was missing.
I dont see myself getting the nu52 Batman.
I will get Xanadu and Constantine.
If the character is someone I remember having a place in comics I will want at least one version of the character.
Sometimes if the sculpt is really awesome I am in.
But I DONT need most alternate version like Hulk Buster Iron Man or Thor Frog of Thunder or Vampire Batman.

I would have to say I am still a "Complete the Set" person then anything else.
For DC clix, which is my favorite clix universe. I tend to be very aggressive in finishing their releases. Since Hypertime came out I have always said I will get every DC pice there is, but I am slowly regretting my decision. I only tend to play 3-5 keyword teams and a scattering on villains. Alot of the other pieces get used at home but not in a tourney setting.
Except for needing to get all of the 3 Convention pieces; Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Dr. Fate and either of the colossal Dr. Manhattan's. I have everything else since Hypertime, and unless I win one of them in the Supremacy League or a tourney for them, it will be awhile before I can afford to buy either one. I just cant see spending $60-80 for anyone one of them. I'm also not interested in trading an arm or a leg just to get one of them. For future DC releases I figure I will be the same way as I will do my best to quickly get every piece.
For Marvel I use to be the same way, but over the last 5 sets I have all the CUR done, but I dont have all of the SR or chases. From IC to HOT which was the last Marvel set I did complete. I'm missing 31 old LEs and the 4 zombie chases. Out of the lat 5 sets I'm missing arround 20 pieces which are all SR's or chases.
As far as Indyclix goes, I'm missing most of the european only figures and the LEs from that set. All of the other indyclix releases go I'm only missing 1 piece (Master Chief on the Ghost chase) to have all of them complete. But most of these sets my kids like, so I have worked on getting them done.
But with all the clix releases in the future and since its looking like Neca is going to push more at us. I will have to change my plans toward buying clix. I thought about keeping my DC and just getting my favorite team in Marvel, but with my 2 sons and me being the primary clix players in the family and with them prefering to play Marvel its difficult to cut down.
If it was just me alone who plays I would have cut my Marvel and Indy down to my favorite teams/figures and still kept my DC going a few years ago.

Ok...gonna try to sound insightful...
The simplest answer is usually the most accurate. I think greed is why the market is flooded. Now that they've discovered a solid, efficient, and cheap process they're letting it rip. I assume Wizkids attempted to understand if flooding gets them more money vs. letting everyone slowly complete their completionist drive...or maybe they have production down to such a cheap science that it doesn't matter. What I find interesting is what happens when a hobby driven by a completionist majority (as most of you have indicated as your starting point) suddenly offers too much to complete. What's gonna win and by how big a spread? At first "Complete the Team" was dominant...but a more functional "Favorites" has carved out the lead. after 500+ voters I think we have an answer...but it's not a unanimous answer!
And btw thank you everybody for giving great testimonies!
My method is to purchase only the figures I "want" via ebay or trading on the realms to prevent the hording of useless CUR's that I would have to place for, by "want" I mean my favorite characters and 97% of the time they happen to be competitive pieces. In the end I only have the figures I like and need.
"I want you to remember my hand at your throat. I want you to remember the one man who beat you." -Batman
I try to buy 2-3 cases of each set (1 or 1/2 of micro sets/gravity feeds) and trade for whatever I'm missing. I do try to get a full set as quickly as possible, but I will not pay more than $30 for a figure and I shop around as much as possible. I just like having the options, as well as getting invested in characters (especially ones I've never heard of before)
My collecting would be 'None of the above'. I recently sold off the vast majority of my DC clix (only kept Sinestro Corps, Apokalips and a few other pieces), and with the rare exception I'll only be collecting Marvel from here on out.

Straight form the horses mouth (not that you are a horse Typhon ) ladies and gentlemen. Some of us have been saying this for a while now, but the 'WK poops rainbows' crowd refuse to see it.............

Really, WizKids is going under is what you get from all of the product that is coming out.
Looks to me like WizKids has lots of product out because of the movie tie-ins for Avengers and Dark Knight Rises. Same as the toy companies do if you walk down the toy aisles at a TRU or Walmart or Target. Take those out of the picture and the amount of product coming out isn't that high.
Also, take into account that Street Fighter, Star Trek, and Lord of the Rings (while compatible) are different games much like Horrorclix and Mage Knight were back in the day. No one says that a player has to collect everything. I didn't collect Horrorclix or Mage Knight before. I don't collect Halo and Star Trek now. Just because it's a compatible game system doesn't mean that you have to collect it all. That would be like saying you like Monopoly so you must collect all the versions of it (there's like 20 some versions of it now).
As for convention exclusives, I find it funny that players are going to leave the game over them. Sure hope you can find a game where those don't exist as I play Tannhauser from FF and they had one. Heroscape had them when they were around. MonPoc had them when they were around. Magic has them all of the time with alternate artwork/full art/judge rewards, etc. Exclusives are a part of any collectible game. Hence the reason they are collectible.
The assumption Wizkids is going under because a GLUT of product is available is....
If they were going under you will see short production run sets, distribution issues and shipping delays, quiet cancellations or TBD release schedules etc.
The game looks healthier than ever. It is most likely want I said before expanded movie and videogame releases intermixed with contractual issues for keeping a release schedule that satisfies both license holders.
What I really want to know is how bad DCs New 52 reboot messed with the plan, I bet a WHOLE lot?!
