Contrary to what some of you may think, I wholeheartedly support a lot of what WK does. DKR is a great example - great dials, sculpts, and character selection, good distribution, and best of all no catering to the scalper market with Target chases. Gold stars all around.
MK Revenge, however, makes me want to put on the red ring and spew blood. As one of those people who has played Heroclix since it was called Mage Knight I would love to see the game return, but their Kickstarter campaign is nonsense on so many levels that I'm not quite sure where to start.
1) WK Has no business being on Kickstarter.
Kickstarter is a platform for independent creators, not for nationally recognized companies that are supported by other, better known companies. Seriously, don't give me this bull that it isn't WK behind this; MFV (or whatever Icarus is calling itself nowadays) is not a struggling artist trying to put their work out because they're tired of open mic nites and playing for beer tickets. For them to try to distance themselves from their corporate connections is dishonest at best.
2) $700K?!? Are you out of your freaking minds!?!
If you break down the 'Rewards' they offer, you have to spend $170 before you get a physical starter and two random LEs. The difference between this and the previous reward is $20, but instead of simply bundling it with the digital download at the $20-$25 level (like EVERY OTHER STARTER) they are so afraid of losing money that they won't take a chance on physical figures unless their customer base pre-invests at a level many times their costs. Oh, and you don't even get the signed poster that comes with the $150 level (you know, for the nonexistent fan tired of being burdened by physical figures).
From there the Rewards increase proportionally to the degree with which WK considers their fans suckers, there isn't any need to highlight them here. But for those of you without a physical venue I could understand paying $15 for the basic online game if it weren't many times what we paid for HCO. Which brings me to my next point.
3) MFV Still hasn't gotten HCO right.
People on HCO know what I'm talking about, but what's baffling about some of those people is the way they still make excuses for the bugs after over a year without any significant improvements to the interface. MFV definitely isn't ready to take on another project of this magnitude.
Again, I would love to see MK in stores again. With all the money they save on licensing fees it could be even better than it was. But for the reasons I've highlighted above this is not a serious attempt to do so as much as a way for them to not pay actual money to do diligent market research.
It's a big middle finger to all the fans out there, so right back atcha, WK.
(but call us if you decide to get serious)

$700,000.00 seems a very large sum of money for any Kickstarter to acquire in a month's time, although I'm sure others have done it. A question here is the amount of exposure that this is getting to get people to donate. Sure it's running as an ad on HCRealms (and I'd wager other RealmWorx sites), but it would need wider exposure to get more people interested, and really, how do you target people who used to play Mage Knight and no longer play Heroclix?
My big fear is that this will fail and be used as an excuse to not relaunch Mage Knight.
In Golden Age, I don't always play a Brute theme team, but when I do, I play IC 155 Knuckles.

I didn't say he didn't. I was just, y'know, throwin' a comment out there.
He does make valid points. the HCO comment really rings true with me, since I was beta-testing it before and there were a lot. lot. lot. of problems.
As a sporadic player of HCO I would be extremely hesitant to try anything else that company produces and I sure wouldn't give them money to produce something else regardless of the subject matter.
QueensGambit you are spot on! When I read the Mage Knight news today I was overly confused, and something just does not seem right for a game that is not currently active!?!?!? Originally, HCO initial approach was too expensive for an online game and this made most Heroclix players dislike and refuse this idea from the start, and I feel that they are making the same mistakes early on for this Mage Knight online expansion!
I'm still psyched about even the suggestion, but the Kickstarter method sorta stinks of lots of different funkyness.
I mean, you're NECA, for God's sake. Why do you need my money before taking my money? You just released the board game and it did gangbusters. Just release the MK figures as a set with both types of dials, let Heroclix people play them and us MK people have a brief but satisfying revival, and let Icarus make the video game and release it for free online as a side project.
Using Kickstarter in this way is undermining the point of the system. It's like Disney asking for money to make a movie.

This is the only point I can possibly agree with at present.
All your points are valid and I agree. At first I was wondering why they needed donations. Then was amazed at the amount they hope to raise. After that I was underwhelmed by the rewards. For those that would be interested in the physical game only. It leaves a lot to be desired.
