While we are getting the umpteenth version of Superman, Batman and some color or other of Lantern, there are still oh so many more or less popular characters out there that are still waiting impatiently for their Heroclix debut.

Today I will be talking about one of the Legion of Super-Heroes’ oldest foes… Universo!

Universo is one of the Legion's longest-standing enemies, with massive powers of mind control and illusion. Twice he has managed to control all of Earth by subverting its leadership, both for an extended period of time. Later, it was revealed that he had been a member of the Green Lantern Corps turned rogue, after lusting for forbidden knowledge. (Too bad he got booted out, because his outfit is a serious step down from the GL uniform!)

His son, Rond Vidar, often worked with the Legion to thwart him-- and later joined the Legion and Green Lantern Corps himself.

Why clix him? He's a long-standing LSH villain, and there are precious few of them made into Clix as it stands.

Who would he play with?

Universo is usually something of a loner, although he did team up with some Legionnaires and Substitute Legionnaires during a period of time when Earth was overrun by the Dominators. Generally, any alliance he might form will be temporary and only to serve his own ends. I would pair him with the few LSH foes that have been made-- Lightning Lord, Saturn Queen, Cosmic King, Mordru-- if playing in a theme mode.

As a master mind controller, you could justify pairing him with just about anybody, however.


Likely keywords: Future, ruler, and maaaaaybe Green Lantern Corps (though he didn't get into the mind-control thing until after he was booted out).

What would his dial look like?

I imagine very long range and mind-control with multiple targets.

I would make a special MC power that allowed him persistent control of a target, and certainly he would not take feedback damage.

I'd make him Calculator to represent ways he manipulates others and benefits.

i'd give him the LoSV keyword. he did work with the prime-inspired line-up in final crisis: legion of 3 worlds, which makes the calculator TA even more thematic since they toss it on all the LoSVers as a counterpoint to the LoSH TA.

I'd like to see him; but I'd also like to see his son Rond Vidar, the Legion sacrificial lamb just to hard sell the idiotic Crybaby Prime and shoehorn a worthless character into Legion continuity.

Controller of the Masses: When Universo uses Mind Control or Incapacitate, he may use it as if he had 8 range and three targets.
Behind the Scenes: Universo can use Stealth and Mind Control
Long Term Control: Universo may use Possession. When he does, and the target is possessed at the end of your turn, do not deal Universo one unavoidable damage, even if the die result is less than 6.
Confusion: Universo can use Perplex and Shape Change.
Master Controller: When Universo uses Mind Control, he takes no feedback damage.



Not sure if he's a little overpowered, I'm not to familiar with the character.

Mine also, one of the first I read. I also like when he threw Saturn Girl, Brainy, Dream Girl and Cham on a "prison" world.

Ha! Fun piece. This is definitely one of those characters I was only distantly aware of, being more of a Marvel fan and only dabbling in early Legion material.

You know, before Geoff Johns came up with that rejected-Twinkies-ad idea of the multiple Lanterns and started coming up with the most painfully obvious charactonyms since the Sivanas first visited the maternity ward, all the evil Green Lanterns' names ended with "o". There was Sinestro, of course; Universo, subject of this article; and Lord Malvolio, briefly glimpsed in Green Lantern's series in Action Comics Weakly. Coincidence? I think not.

In my heart, all DC characters are still in books that cost 12 cents and have a chekerboard at the top of the cover - and all Marvel characters are in 12 cent books that say "Marvel Pop Art Productions" on the cover!
