Hey, remember a time when the Avengers and the X-Men weren't at each others throats? Well, if you don't, we're going to take a trip back to 1993 for a crossover where Earth's Mightiest and the Merry Mutants fought to save Genosha and a little Inhuman girl. Plus, we can use a mix of new Chaos War figures along the way!
For those that didn't read it, Bloodties was a five part story that ran through both main Avengers and X-Men titles. It centered around Fabian Cortez, who upon his exile from Magneto's Acolytes enacted a plan to get revenge on him and his family. Fabian was masterminding havoc in the mutant country of Genosha and he kidnapped Luna, the daughter of Quicksilver and Crystal to boot. Of course, we could argue how effective this plan was since not only was Magneto in a vegetative state at the time so he was completely oblivious to the revenge that was attempting to be enacted on him, but this brilliant plan also brought the full force of two super-teams down on Fabian's head, it's safe to say that effective planning was not Fabian's strong suit.
Of course, the downside to this crossover is that one of the most important characters in the story, Exodus, doesn't currently exist in Heroclix. He spent the whole storyline duking it out with the Avengers as he was trying to chase down Cortez. This past weekend, my Comic Accurate predecessor Dr. Morbius covered Exodus in his awesome Unclixed article. If you haven't read it, do so by clicking HERE!
Now like most crossovers, there were a number of plot-lines going at once as the groups all split up into what come out to four groups that we can use for our builds. And because we're only a little ways away from the release of Chaos War, we're going to be using some figures from the main set, the micro set and even the Fast Forces and a Con Exclusive.
The first group consisted of Professor X, who was traveling to Genosha as an ambassador in an attempt to negotiate peace between the warring factions of the country. Beast accompanied Xavier as did his government appointed bodyguards, USAgent and Henry Peter Gyrich.

(Special) In Contact with Cerebro: If Professor X is in your starting area, he can draw lines of fire and count Range for his Speed, Attack, and Damage powers from the square of any friendly character with whom he shares a keyword. (Damage) I've Learned Your Secrets: Professor X can use Outwit. Once per turn, when he uses Outwit to counter a standard power, he may immediately use Outwit again, but only to counter a power of the same color.
(Special) Leaps and Bounds: Beast can use Leap/Climb and Super Senses.

This team comes out to 300 points on the nose! Though if you want room for feats, you could always bust Beast down to a number of different and equally good other versions: The vet from Mutations & Monsters, the one from the Danger Room starter or even the Fast Forces version. Your call.
Meanwhile, the Avengers were having a much more difficult time getting to Genosha than the Professor. Seeing all the chaos and casualties on the news, Captain America and the others desperately wanted to help, only to be told by Nick Fury and SHIELD that they were under orders to stay put. But upon discovering Luna's kidnapping, Crystal and Scarlet Witch were adamant on going to rescue her. SHIELD was still saying "No, you're staying".
So of course, a fight broke out.
Cap, Wanda, Rhodey and the 90's-love triangle of Crystal, Sersi and Black Knight escaped to make their way to Genosha, while the rest ran interference and stayed behind to deal with the political red tape.

(Speed) Twin Elements: Firestorm: When Crystal uses the Tornado trait, also deal 1 penetrating damage to each hit character after actions resolve. (Attack) Twin Elements: Waterspout: When Crystal uses the Tornado trait, also give an action token to each hit character with zero action tokens after actions resolve. (Damage) Twin Elements: Sandstorm: When Crystal uses the Tornado trait, after actions resolve, hit characters use Toughness instead of Invulnerability or Impervious for the rest of the turn.

(Special) The Suit: Captain America can use Toughness. (Defense) Shield Slash: When Captain America makes a ranged attack and the result of the attack roll is doubles, he deals penetrating damage. When Captain America makes a ranged attack and the attack roll is 10 or higher, give an action token to all hit characters after actions resolve.
573 points. That leaves you enough points for an Armor Piercing on Crystal, Heightened Reflexes on Cap and maybe some Pym Particles for Sersi to give her a defensive bump.
Now here's the team that spent their part of this crossover dealing with the United Nations. Events that basically led to the Avengers losing their government charter and resulting in the dissolution of the West Coast team and the formation of Force Works. Thanks heaps, Hawkeye.

(Speed) Adjustable Matter Scan: Vision can use Phasing/Teleport. Characters he targets with an attack can't use Shape Change or Super Senses for that attack. (Defense) Synthezoid Construct: Vision can use Super Senses and Toughness.
Add in the Thunderbolts ATA for Hawkeye and Widow and we're at 596 points. I'm using the Chaos War CTD Vision based on point value more than anything else. Personally, if I can fit the marquee version on the team instead, I'd go for that regardless of powers. Your mileage may vary though.
So far, we've covered what the Avengers and a couple of X-Men were doing, but how about the bulk of the X-Men? Basically, they all went over to Genosha to try and track down Luna en masse. This is a big build, but I don't want it to be too large, so I'm going to be using a few duos to trim the costs down a bit. Worst case scenario, I could just split 'em.
Sibling Duo: When a friendly character named Scarlet Witch is adjacent to Quicksilver, modify both their attack values by +1 if not already modified by this effect. Arrogant Assault: Quicksilver can use Flurry. He may use it normally, or as a free action instead of a close combat attack while using Hypersonic Speed. If he uses it in this way, modify his defense value by -1 until your next turn for each hit.
(Attack) Slym and Redd: Give Cyclops / Phoenix a power action. They can then be given two free actions to use Force Blast and Telekinesis once each. (Damage) Rigorous Trainers: Cyclops / Phoenix can use Leadership and Enhancement. When using Enhancement, the adjacent friendly character also modifies its attack value by +1.
(Special) Final Kiss: Once per game on your turn, as a free action you may choose that Gambit / Rogue can't use the duo attack ability or special powers for the rest of the game. If you do, heal Gambit / Rogue 2 clicks and remove all action tokens from them. (Attack) Sugah and Spice: Gambit / Rogue can use Force Blast and Penetrating/Psychic Blast. When they use either one, after actions resolve they may use it again as a free action, if they take 1 unavoidable damage after that resolves. (Damage) Charming Rogues: Gambit / Rogue can use Outwit targeting only adjacent characters. If they do and they counter a standard power, Gambit / Rogue can use that countered power until your next turn.
(Defense) Slippery: Iceman can use Toughness. When an opposing character moves and becomes adjacent to Iceman, roll a d6. On a result of 1-3, the character is immediately knocked back from Iceman a number of squares equal to the result, in a direction of your choosing.
Here's where the build gets a little tricky... The last member of this X-Men team was Revanche; the assassin in the old body of Psylocke. She hasn't been formally clixed, but the vet Psylocke from Armor Wars is a spot-on representation of her. The sculpt is her body and she's got the Stealth and Exploit you'd expect from a ninja character, so that's who I'm using.
If you don't feel comfortable subbing for Revanche, then feel free to drop her. Believe me, it's unlikely anyone will notice her abscence. The panels she appears in make it look like she was added in after the fact, and the only time she's referenced is when she's knocked unconscious. Tacking her on brings the team to 858 points. Swingline and Armor Piercing for Quicksilver, Heightened Reflexes for Storm and Stunning Blow for Iceman. Big team, but pretty solid.
That's it this article. Thanks for joining us as we looked back at Bloodties. Next time, we head to the DC Universe... for Justice!
I can't help but feel that there might be some way to upgrade the Bishop on that last team to the uber-awesome one from Mutations and Monsters. Of course, the only thing I can think of right off the top of my head is to use the Fast Forces Iceman instead of the one being used. I think I might want to try that version of the team first, then maybe change it back if it does poorly. Still, good job! Not really a fan of Marvel from the 90s, but these look like some fun and interesting teams to try out.
Great article! I enjoyed this storyline, i was in high school when it came out. And good lord Sersi needs a remake!! That dial is jut horrible and does not at all represent the powerhouse that she is.
I don't understand Quicksilver's Arrogant Assault power.
If you use Flurry during HSS (which is the alternative method), you modify his defense by -1 for each hit of the Flurry. So if he hit's twice with Flurry on the first click, his defense would be 15 + ES/D.
Damn. Just mentioned this storyline in the"Crystal is up thread" last week and now we get a write up. Awesome! That dude the Avengers dropped before this storyline(Proctor?) was badass too!
