While we are getting the umpteenth version of Thor and Iron Man, there are still oh so many more or less popular characters out there that are still waiting impatiently for their Heroclix debut.
Today I will be talking about a guy who makes the Silver Surfer look like warmonger... The Aquarian!
The Aquarian originally was known as Wundaar (his given name) and kicked around Marvel's less popular titles for a few years as a knock off/parody/critique of Superman. Marvel seems to have had a number of those (Hyperion, Gladiator, Senty) but what set Wundaar apart was that during the classic Project Pegasus Saga he evolved into somebody quite different... the Aquarian!
While he originally had Superman powers, once he bonded with the Cosmic Cube he gained powers more like Leech-- dampening energy levels in a "null field" that he can expand and contract. This fit well with his pacifist personality, and he became a bit of a wanderer spreading peace and love.
Why clix him?
He's the last character that needs to be made to finish off the Project Pegasus lineup, most of all. This landamark series helped establish the Quasar we know and love, as well as having a great line-up of offbeat characters like Deathlok and Thundra.
Who would he play with?
As noted, any of the Project Pegasus cast for starters.
He later was signed up by the Initiative, so you pair him with any number of other offbeat characters!
Likely keyword: Initiative
What would his dial look like?
Wundarr was super-strong and could leap-- but his field prevents him from being too active. He retains his durability, and in fact that would be enhanced by his null field.
Alien strength (Super Strength)
Dakkamite prowess(Invulnerability)
Try again! (Toughness)
Your powers... for peace! (Outwit)
Key to him would be his special power(s) representing the null field. Even though he has Super Strength and can pick up objects, they would not be used in attacks! I think something like this:
All characters within 4 squares of this character have their damage dealt reduced to zero.
All characters within 4 squares have their movement value replaced with 4.
Some form of Incapacitate would not be inappropriate-- either for the effects of the null field, or for representing his transmission of his enhanced awareness, which turned people peaceful.
I would not give him a TA.
What would your Aquarian dial look like? Share it here!
And then join me in ONE WEEK when I showcase an Unclixed DC character, and in two weeks Dr Morbius returns with another Unclixed Marvel character!
Exploit weakness would be a good work around his top trait, or you could just shoot him. But if his trait would reduce his own damage, wouldn't he just make for an annoying outwitter?
I remember his initial appearance in Man-Thing's series. I'd love to see him clixed.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Killraven, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.
A character I've not revisited in many years, I can't say he was ever a favorite.
As you note, he started off (as Wundarr) as a parody of Superman -- basically his father was a crackpot whose predictions of planetary destruction didn't pan out, and Wundarr grew to young adulthood while in the capsule (which an Earth couple see crash, but decide to steer clear of as it could be some nasty alien) and emerged with the mind of a child - no damage, but simply a blank slate - but superhuman strength and resistance to damage. Very, very Steve Gerber.
More or less temporarily adopted by Ben Grimm (who became his "unca' Benjy" for a while, the joke elements ran their course. Reed gave him a suit to keep Wundarr from overloading, and he ultimately drifted out of the picture.
The evolution to Wundarr was more of Marvel's living encyclopedia of history and characters, Mark Gruenwald's, actions. For better or worse, he tred to work everything in.
It all reminds me that I am many years overdue for revisiting the Project Pegasus story. I recall enjoying it very much... up to a point, and I'm afraid that at least at that time the point where I became less interested was with the rise of The Aquarian. A being whose power was the antithesis of action simply wasn't a big draw to this teenager. Oh, look! It's the Aquarian! It's time for... nothing to happen.
As for the dial design, the damage reduction from attacks should really apply to all attacks - close combat or ranged, because anything entering his personal Null Field is essentially nullified, its energy drained. I'd suggest that all incoming Damage is reduced to no more than 2
I would go so far as to say that any character adjacent to him (friend or foe) should find all of his Attack powers switched off while they're there. With special concentration he can expand that field, so I'd add that if he takes a Double Power Action he could extend that field to, say, 10 squares.
I'd make all of the Null Field elements a Trait, btw, rather than a Defensive SP. His defense powers should simply be Toughness. Between that and the Null Field he should simply be taking a single click of damage from each attack dealt by someone who's dealing 2 or more Damage.
Those are just some initial thoughts, though. You know how it goes -- one has to run through scenarios to see where the loopholes are and make adjustments.
Another good piece, Ignatz.

All characters within 4 squares of this character have their damage dealt reduced to zero.
So the only way to deal damage to him is to deal penetrating damage. I would prefer something like this:
Be At Peace: Aquarian can use Impervious. Roll 1d6, on a roll of 1-4 characters within 4 squares or who begin this turn within 4 squares of Aquarian cannot make an attack.[/quote]
This will prevent him from being attacked at close combat and seems to be a pretty effective and unique way to represent his null field.
Also, I might add this SP: I Don't Want to Fight You! Aquarian can use Super Strength. When Aquarian is carrying an object and he is attacked, increase his defense, as well as the defense of any adjacent friendly figure by +2. If the attack is successful, the damage dealt becomes 1 and is unavoidable damage. After the attack the object is removed from the game unless the attack roll was a critical miss.
This illustrates a more defensive posture and has a drawback which is not overwhelming in comparison to the benefit.
Wish it was that case for Red Hulk, Sentry and nearly every character Rob Liefeld ever created.

If that was true, we wouldn't have Deadpool,Domino,or Cable. I actually like those characters...same goes for Red Hulk and Sentry. The rest of Liefeld's creations should be burned and forgotten.
