My roommate just watched Pacific Rim and was really excited about it, so he bought the two player Pacific Rim 2 figure mini-game. We just finished playing two games with it. I used to play heroclix (think original release and first expansion), so I have a general idea of how the game plays. He was learning the rules as we went.
Here's my question: how is it possible for Gypsy Danger to kill Slattern? All of the flack (tanks, planes, ships) hit on 11's or 12's, have to get through Shape Shift (and sometimes impervious), and the Kaiju TA instantly kills them in response. GD hits Slattern on 8+ and has no way to get the first strike. If GD moves up to shoot, Slattern can just charge him. In CC, Slattern just rips GD to pieces.
We tried playing with both characters at their reduced point values, but that's almost worse. Slattern starts with Hypersonic Speed and the attack ability that targets everyone in Slattern's reach. I killed his entire flack shield in one attack (they grouped up to use the TA) and left GD at one click left.
As I type this, it occurs to me that we should have tried GD at max power and Slattern at reduced power. But I don't think that would help very much; unless GD manages to avoid every click of Unstoppable, Slattern's going to wreck him.
Help me out here. The box came without a scenario sheet, which googling suggests should exist, so maybe the scenario makes it more fair. As it is, this doesn't seem like a workable game. It definitely gave my roommate a very negative impression of clix games.
Any idea how I can find a scenario sheet? As it is, this is pretty absurd. Even at reduced, Slattern starts with movement 11 with hypersonic speed on a 6x16 map, and has an attack that hits everyone in a range 2 radius around him for full damage (6 in the water). Even if GD makes multiple Impervious rolls, Slattern's just going to eat him.
Its almost the same as the Fear Itself scenario pack. People found it difficult to defeat the reduced, 150pt Skadi with an 88pt Captain America, even with the scenario where he heals under certain effect.
They sell it more as a way to get you interested in the other figs, I guess. That Kaiju is just too much for that pack, honestly. Too powerful.
Im not sure where to find a Scenario sheet but Im sure someone on here will help you with a link or tell you the scenarios if they bought a pack that actually contains one.
I don't know if there's even supposed to be a scenario sheet, but my suggestion is to run it with GD at full points and run all the pogs as if they had the Pan-Pacific Defense TA. That should make it pretty easy to get hits on Slattern but still be competitive.
Personally, I think the battle set on its own comes down to who hits first -
equivalent points would be
GD at Full (225)
3 Jet pogs (75)
Slattern at reduced (300)
GD and Slattern both need 7's to hit and don't deal penetrating damage, so Impervious could stifle their attacks. If Slattern deals damage first, it is probably over for Earth as GD gets knocked onto non-move and attack clicks with low ranged damage until his last click, where the next hit it deals takes it out...
If GD deals damage first, the Earth has a chance. Because of Giant Reach (or because of its range) it doesn't have to base the Kaiju to harm it (I would skip the chainsword, as you would have to roll 10+ to do better than the base damage). That puts GD on Perplex, where he can try to reduce the damage. Between Perplex and PD ability at least a couple of the Jets should be able to deal their penetrating damage (getting KO'd just means they ran out of missiles and had to return to base), reducing the Kaiju even further for GD to finish off (probably the best thing Slattern can do if it doesn't deal damage with first strike is to base GD in a non-diagonal adjacent square to reduce the effectiveness of PD TA).
So, while the "good guys" need to play with both strategy and more than a little luck, I think it is possible for either side to win at 300, though Slattern has quite an advantage with its first strike ability.
Also, I haven't personally seen the mini-map that comes with the game, so I don't know if its size would make a difference in the game (if Slattern can base the Jets right off the bat, they become worse than useless basically). Just my thoughts. Thanks for reading!
A new SR Power Girl in 2013 please! WizKids, ask me for ideas!
<DC whispers in my ear for a moment>
What the @#$% do you mean, "revamp?"
This release shoulda been designed way the hell better is the thing. Most mini-games are ignorable, this one SHOULD have been the core game that the GF release acted as boosters for. Instead... it's a poorly-thought-out bit of half-assery that WK should be embarrassed about.
How it could have been a Must-Buy in 3 easy steps:
1) Hordes instead of Bystanders, designed in a more useful fashion. As they are, they're dead weight.
2) I like the map, and I like the size of it, but it should have included a scenario outline that justified the size. At least a reprint/reworking of the SF 1v1 rules. The map being 2-sided woulda been sweet gravy.
3) Design special intro-dials for the 2 mini-game figs. Reusing booster figures, especially ones from a set this small, is cheap AND mean to any new players you'd hope to cultivate.
I can't believe they didn't include a scenario sheet in this. That's just....typical I guess.
And the tokens work as bystanders and not horde style?
Does anyone at Wizkids have Internet access and the ability to look up modern military tactics? Scratch that, common sense?
Military Officer: "Sir, there's a giant monster off the coast of New York tearing it to pieces."
The Sir in question: "Very well. Since we knew about these in time to build giant robots to confront them and we're constantly in a ready state to confront the giant monsters I have quite an arsenal at my disposal. Send 3 tanks, 2 jets, and one ship. That should do it. Where's my coffee?"
Wasted opportunity. Oh well, at least they're selling well and if they make a sequel then maybe we'll see a few full sized colossal versions of these....bringing me one step closer to: Titan Maximum!!
Alex (my son) and I played the mini-game twice today.
First, we played at 600 points. He had Slattern while I used Gipsy Danger, three tanks, and filled up the rest of the points with jets. It was a massacre.
Next, I played Slattern at 300 points while Alex built a team up to 600. The fighting was far more even. Alex pulled off the win but it was far from a certain thing. It didn't help my side that I rolled snake eyes on my first attack. So much for Shape Change.
Oh, and we agreed on a range of four for the jets until an official errata is announced. That, more than anything, was pretty sloppy on WizKids' part.
At the tourney this week one player ran 600pt Slattern and I ran GD, Striker(at half points) and Crimson(at half). I was able to win but only GD survived and just barely. It was a great game that could have gone either way. I did use warbots for the remaining points on my team. Slattern is great for his points.
