i cant figure out what the energy spike in the furnace is and how do i get it or do whatever i need to do

Is that on your Map Screen? If so, I think those Energy Spikes let you know where to go next. Just follow your map and try to get to the location where the energy spike is. Are you in the beginning to middle stages of the Game?

Press the Z Botton as well, I believe that will auotmatically pull out your map and show a ? where you need to go.
