DC has started talking about making a Shazam/Captain Marvel film. So, I was thinking, who would you cast in the roles of the main characters?
Here's some of my favorite choices.
Billy Batson/Mary Batson/Freddie Freeman. Get no name actors. The kids, while important to the story, isn't what folks will go to see. We go to superhero movies to see the heroes.
Captain Marvel=Brendan Fraiser. If there is one guy in Hollywood who seems to have a 10 year old "Holey Moley" type of kid caught inside him, it would be Fraiser.
Mary Marvel=If they would include Mary, I'd say Christy Carslon Romano, from "Even Stevens" and "Kim Possible" on the Disney channel. Yes, she's just out of her teens, and would be appropriate to be a tad younger than Cap when they "Marvel Out."
CM3/Captain Marvel Junior=This one is hard, as in modern tales, they don't really do much with CM Jr. Anyone got any good ideas?
Black Adam=When I pulled my first Black Adam, a friend commented, "He looks like The Rock." After reading some JSA and the Power of Shazam, I got to agree; the Rock would get my vote as Theo Adam.
Sivana=You need a guy who can be creepy, old, and has a pretty weird shaped head. Besides the knee-jerk "Patrick Stewart" since he's bald response, anyone have a good idea?
The Wizard=again, get beyond Ian McKellan or Christopher Lee, and who would you say? I'd say get an actor like Michael Anzara or Ian Holm, who have strong screen presence.
Billy Batson: Fran Muniz (Malcolm)
Mary Batson: Lindsay Lohan
Good call on The Rock! I gotta go with Warburton Cap though
Makeup and costume would make Sivana. I would choose Steve Buscemi for him. He can do conniving and snivelly REALLY well
Get Kelsey Grammar to do the voice of Mr. Mind
Igitur qui desiderat pacem, praeparet bellum <- my view on gun control
oderint, dum metuant <- my view on foreign policy
Alea jacta est <- my view on taking back declared actions
Patrick Warburton is an absolute must. Not having Patrick as the big red cheese would be like doing without Patrick Stuart as Professor X. You either get him, or don't bother with the project at all.
You know, I never thought of Warburton as Cap, but you're right. He'd be perfect (plus, it would break the whole "Mummy" thing that was attached to it here.)
Frankie Munoiz is now too old to play a ten year old. He also wouldn't look anything like Warburton, so that wouldn't work either.
As far as Lindsay Lohan, I have another comic character for her to do, but we'll do that movie as Casting Couch #2. As to who she'd play, you'll just have to watch for that.....
I'm locking Steve Buscemi as Sivana, as I dig Steve, unless someone suggests an actor and we all go, "Perfect!"
We're still looking for locks on
Mary Marvel (still think Christy Romano would be perfect,)
Captain Marvel Junior (how about Wil Friedle? Or even Barry Watson?) ,
the Wizard (Michael Anzara),
and anyone else have an opinion on Kelsey Grammar doing the voice of Mr. Mind? (Although, if I wrote a script on that, I'd drop the "Mr." part of the name and just make it the "MindWyrm.")
And before anyone asks, no Marvel Bunny or Tawking Tawny, unless you could think of a really cool way to do it.
I must admit, Patrick Wharburton does look remarkably like Captain Marvel. I would love to see him play that part.
For the rest, why do we always want name actors to play a part? Let them do a big casting trying and find an unknown who looks a lot more like Black Adam than the Rock and a lot more like Sivana than Steve Buscemi.
(I like both of them, that's why I would not want to see them play these roles. Comics are different from regular books. In a book you visualize a character without ever actually seeing that character. In a comic, we know these faces so the casting has to be much more in line with what a character looks like or it just doesn't work!)
And, also very important, you can sign an unknown for a lot less money which leaves more for script, special effects and the rest...
Well, its hard to do these type of "dream" casts by saying, "How about someone no one knows, yet?"
Also, with named actors, you bring a certain audience to a project.
Now, none of the names listed so far are HUGE stars. The Rock is gaining some popularity in film, Warburton would be un-tested on the big screen as a lead, Lindsey Lohan is just getting a run on film, and Steve Buscemi? Well, while he's been in a ton of flicks, you'd be surprised how many know him just as "that wierd looking guy, right?" Now, if you always did the HUGE named actors, like Nicholson, Hanks, Washington, yeah, you'd never get the right fit for a guy or girl to play a part.
As far as looks is concerned, I do think you'd be hard pressed to get anyone to look more like Black Adam thank Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, maybe if someone was built like that, dark complexion, AND had naturally slanted ears would you get a better fit.
But alas, we still can't find a Captain Marvel Jr.....
Originally posted by DTM CM has to be Puddy from Seinfeld, Patrick Warburton I think he name was. Big guy, similiar facial features, and Im sure he can act somewhat.
OMG thats the first guy that popped into my head when I saw the title of this thread!!!!!!!
He always has a stupid grin on his face too doesnt he. Hes no stranger to the super hero mantel either.
The Tick anyone?
Man, first Tick, then Andy Richter, and now Arrested Development. Why is it then whenever fox gets an actual smart comedy, it gets cancelled? It's a shame.
Indeed Qwardian. I LOVED the live-action Tick. I'm not big on DC, but I'd go see this no questions asked if Warburton were to fill the CM tights, though it wouldn't feel right not seeing him in blue...
Frontman, I 100% agree on Rock as Black Adam. I had the exact same thought when I pulled my Experienced one from my first batch of Unleashed boosters.
DD13, you forgot Greg the Bunny! I'll never forgive FOX for taking it away and then not even giving me a DVD set of it.

The live action version of The Tick came out on DVD several months ago. I believe there was even an unaired episode on it. At any rate, it's available. I hate the way Fox handled the show as well. It was obvious from the very beginning that they had no intention of even giving the show a chance. It was never in the same timeslot for more than two weeks in a row. They usually put it up against the most popular shows of the other networks too.
