Since we're all having so much fun in the "Obscure" movies thread, I thought I'd offer up this topic . . .
What movies do you think were saved by surprise endings?
SPOILER SPACE (just in case you haven't seen any of these)

I'm thinking of Field of Dreams myself.
I saw it on video at a friend's house and only on the condition that she watch a movie I liked that she hadn't seen yet (movie exchange basically)
Up 'til the end I was thinking: "Well, at least we get to watch something I know I'll like next." But then, BAM!
Also, Peter Ustinov and his cats at the end of Logan's Run improved it considerably for me
I'd also be interested in movies you think were ruined by surprise endings (I'm looking at YOU, Shyamalan . . . )
Yeah, you'd think that aliens with FTL technology would be able to work around a closet door. Or, you know, would have the sense to check the elemental composition of the planet's atmosphere. Or its dominant species...

I had Sixth Sense spoiled for me before I saw it. (Still brilliant, though)
Unbreakable was just holding up comic book tradition, so I didn't mind.
But Signs, ugh . . .
hmmmm
3 movies by M. Night Shyamalan
Well, if you plan on seeing his next movie, be ready for another surprise ending.
As for my pick with the best surprise ending. White (aka Blanc, aka Bialy)
from Krzysztof Kieslowski. The movie was great all the way along and then......WOW! Fantastic!!! I really recommend people watch it.
Oh, and if you go to imdb.com ignore the comments the guy gave this film. Some people like to pretend to be critics. He didnt know what he was talking about.
To each their own, I guess. Personally, I think M. Knight is 3 for 3 so far, with each movie he does getting better and better. Nit-picking over why invading aliens wouldn't do this or that misses not only the point of the film but the mastery of HOW it was filmed. This guy is one of the most creative directors (and writers, for that matter) Hollywood has to offer right now, and I haven't been disappointed yet by any of his films. The Village looks like it's going to be just as intriguing to me. He knows how to walk the line of filming intense sci-fi/supernatural dramas that invoke fear and mystery without slipping into simple horror or ultimately forgettable tripe.
Truth. Justice. Honor.
If we want them in our world we need to cultivate them in ourselves.

If my post came off as though I was against M. Night, thats not wwhat was intended. I enjoyed his movies very much, especially since I can immate the sound of the aliens. What I was pointing out was this thread is about "twist" or "surpirse" endings. and three were mentioned in one post. all three M. Nights. I want to see the Village very much. It's hard to explain the movie to someone though. "You see, there is a village, and ppl wear yellow. And there is some woods. And The "things" in the woods wear red, and...What do you mean you dont get it? Okay, I will start again. You see..."
Well you get the point.
I rented it, and watched it late at night. I started falling asleep, when I was like, "WTF just happened?! Skip back a couple of chapters!"
It has a great cast, and the twist is not really at the end, but in the last third. Well, there is still a twist at the end, but not as good as the one expanded upon in the third act...
